This post is part of the Indiana Summer Fun 2012 series. Be sure to check out all the ways to enjoy Indiana in true frugal fashion this summer!
Conner Prairie is the perfect place to escape from reality, since you basically walk back in time the minute you walk through the door. The people you meet are in character, pretending they live in the 1800′s, and know so much about the time period they are in that day, it’s amazing all you can learn through a simple conversation.
Building a tower with handcrafted wooden blocks.
The best part, especially for toddlers and kids, is that Conner Prairie is hands on, so you can touch and try almost everything you come across. One home pulled out hand-crafted wood toys including blocks and Noah’s Ark. After, the man who lived in the home had them plant beans in his garden and water them with water they pumped themselves from the water pump. He wore them out and kept them thoroughly entertained. They didn’t want to leave.

In another home we found two young women baking gingersnap cookies. Not only did they let my little ones make a few, but they also let them sample a taste and they were delicious. At Conner Prairie, my girls have dipped candles, been chased by The Headless Horseman, run a general store, listened to Abraham Lincoln speak, and fed a baby cow. They always experience something new that keeps their attention and teaches them about how we lived in Indiana long ago.
Superman headed to the Play Area in the Civil War Journey.
We had a lot of attention during our visiting, since we brought Superman along. (He has a lot of fans we found.) But, as he headed down the train tracks in the new Civil War Journey area, we found a new part of Conner Prairie we didn’t know existed! Tucked inside The General Store, you’ll find the new River Crossing Play Area where kids can climb through a small fort or build a fort and railway of their own with logs, tracks, and more. It was even fun for me to try to figure how the pieces fit together and what we could build.

Right outside the Play Area is a new water area where kids can cool off climbing a steamboat and shooting canons at the splash zone. Plus, float boats and rafts down the small river and hide out in soldiers tents. Unfortunately, it was closed when we stopped by, but I’m looking forward to heading back to try it out!
Running a business at the indoor play area.
Don’t skip Conner Prairie on a rainy day! Conner Prairie also has an indoor museum and play area that’s open year round. It’s a great place to sit and hang out while the kids run their own market, build a train track, or milk a cow (not a real cow, but it’s still cool!).
Why We Love Conner Prairie
Why it’s great for families: There’s so much to learn at Conner Prairie, but with the interactive design kids see it more as fun than learning. There’s hands-on learning activities around every corner. Plus, it’s outdoors, which gives them a chance to run off energy.

What we love most: The baby animals. No question about it. The adorable baby pigs, horses, calves, and goats are so much fun to pet, feed, and just watch.
Our Tips for a Successful Visit
Tips for Young Children & Infants: Make sure to check out the animals. You’ll find pigs, including baby pigs sometimes, at The Golden Eagle Inn, plus cows, calves, horses, goats, and more in The Animal Encounter Barn. There’s also other animals you’ll encounter as you venture around. Bring a carrier for young children. While Conner Prairie is stroller friendly, you’ll spend a lot of time taking little ones in and out of strollers to tour homes and other parts of the historical museum.

Tips for Older Children: Talk to the characters. They all have interesting stories and may even send you on errands, such as bringing messages to other villagers, delivering goods, planting seeds, or baking cookies. Plus, visit the stations throughout the park to try old-fashion games and experiences.
