This post is part of the Indiana Summer Fun 2012 series. Be sure to check out all the ways to enjoy Indiana in true frugal fashion this summer!

My Dad lives in Fort Wayne, so, after spending many summers there, I consider it my second home. While Indianapolis has that big city feel, Fort Wayne somehow manages to have the big-city fun while keeping the small town feel.

I believe I’ve mentioned our favorite attraction – the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, consistently rated one of the Top 10 Zoo’s for Kids in the nation and definitely a reason to visit Fort Wayne, but there’s so much more to do in Fort Wayne.

Another favorite stop of ours is close do downtown Fort Wayne – Headwaters Park. This park hosts many great festivals, concerts, and events, but tucked in the center is a fountain that doubles as a splash pad for kids. We’ve been to many splash pads, but this is my kids favorite, because the fountain shoots streams of water high into the air in the shape of a triangle, making sure to soak everyone nearby.

Another hidden Gem in Fort Wayne is Don Hall’s Old Gashouse, my dad’s favorite restaurant. When my dad first pulled up here for lunch I thought he was out of his mind. He parked in front of a small trailer and headed straight to it. However, around the corner was a beautiful outdoor deck overlooking the river and a gazebo for those who wanted more shade. But despite the fact that the food was cooked in a trailer, it was amazing, plus the view and atmosphere is even better. Make sure to enjoy one of their specialties – seafood, steak, or Cajun foods!

Located up in Northern Indiana, my family truly believes Fort Wayne is the perfect place for a quick getaway – for just one day or overnight.

Why We Love Visit Fort Wayne

Why it’s great for families: There’s so much to do for kids and adults of all ages – Science Central, Botanical Gardens, Fort Wayne Museum of Art. There’s even a Figherfighter’s Museum that’s sure to intrigue young boys (it does mine!)

What we love most: Definitely the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo and Headways Park.

Our Tips for a Successful Visit

Tips for Young Children & Infants: There’s so much to do, but remember to take breaks between activities so little ones can take naps. Many attractions are packed full of great things to see, but small enough you can get through them in less than 3 hours, so you could easily plan a morning and afternoon activity with time for naps and lunch in the middle.

Tips for Older Children: Explore Science Central! There’s so much hands-on activities that older kids will not only enjoy, but learn from as well.

I am terrible at planning outtings. I have had visiting the Fort Wayne zoo on my to do list for a couple of years, but have never followed through. My kids love the zoo and it’s a short drive from where we live!

It is hard for us to ever get away. Fort Wayne is close enough to us that we could slip away for a quick trip… Sounds like a lot of fun for a family trip! Thanks for the chance to win!

my parents live in Fort Wayne and I’d love to go visit and get to go to all the fun spots.

5 Donna Clfford July 30, 2012 at 9:37 AM

This would be a great opportunity for my family. My car is older and long distance trips are not do able, but this would be close enough where I would feel comfortable driving to. I love the fact that there are so many things to keep us busy but not get over loaded.
My doughters LOVE the zoo and we would welcome the oppotunity to check out the Ft. Wayne Zoo. This would be awesome as well since my daughter’s teacher relocated to FW maybe we could look her up as well.

Wayne with the family because, after recently giving birth to baby #3, it would be a great way for my two boys to get out and enjoy some time in the sun, on a fun adventure. We’ve been cooped up in the house for a few weeks and they seem to be going stir-crazy! ;0)
