There is a family owned business near where I live that puts out pallets with a “free” sign on them every so often. Maybe check near the dumpsters of non-big box (they seem to reuse) store home improvement, carpet and flooring or furniture stores.
You might want to check Craigslist in your area in the “free” section or post a “wanted” ad on the site.
