TSummer Fun in Indianahis giveaway is part of the 2011 Summer Fun in Indiana series. Make sure to check out all the places to visit and ways to save on summer fun in Indiana! Enjoy your summer!

I’m absolutely thrilled to kick off the Summer Fun in Indiana Series with one of my favorite places to take my family – the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Izy's 1st pony ride (ever). Actually, this was as far as she made it that year. Petting the HUGE (to her) animal.

This small zoo has been repeatedly voted one of the top 10 kids zoos in the United States for good reason – it was designed with children in mind. How many times have you been to the zoo with children in a stroller? You get to the exhibit and realize your stroller rider can’t see, so you unbuckle them, lift them up, and start searching for the hidden animal? Then, you head to the next exhibit to do it all again.

Oh yes, that's Ady in the kangaroo's cage! They can hop right up to you or past you.

Well, not at the the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. All of the exhibits are visible from low for the tiniest visitors to enjoy. Plus they are interactive. You can feed, pet, play with, and brush many of the animals throughout. There’s lion heads on the drinking fountain and if you’re thirsty, you have to stick your head in the lion’s mouth!

Watching the seals and see, even the smallest in our family (at that time) can see easily on her own!

Why it’s a great place for families: It’s designed for families in mind (and I’m not just saying that)!

Tips & Recommendations for The Whole Family:

The zoo is very stroller friendly. Just watch for peacocks crossing!

For Younger Children: Bring a stroller. The entire zoo is stroller-friendly, so you’re little one can relax, nap, and enjoy the ride. The train ride is long and goes around the lake. You can’t actually see any animals from it, but it’s a very nice cool break that will get your little one to sit in the shade, for a while. Also, make sure to get your pony’s name if you go on a Pony Ride. They all have cute name and my kids love talking to their pony’s.

Bring bathing suits and plan to cool off!

For All Children: Put a bathing suit under your child’s outfit. They can cool off running through the small sprayground and misting stations throughout the zoo. And since it won’t take the whole day to explore the zoo, you’ll have time to take advantage of these spots! Also, make sure to stop and feed the giraffes. It’s a very cool experience. You’re high above them and they reach their head in to take lettuce straight from your hand.

We love the River Ride (and that's my little sister & brother with us!)

For Parents: This zoo is small, but packed with fun things to do. It’s worth the drive, no matter where you live. Unlike most zoos, where you are rushing through to see everything, it only takes about 3 hours to get through the entire zoo and that’s if you take time to enjoy it. So, don’t rush. Stop and let the little ones play at all the attractions to get the full experience.

We always head to the petting zoo first and move around the circle to see everything.

Also, when you walk into the zoo, we start by heading left to the Petting Zoo first and work our way around the circle. That way, by the time we get to the Indonesian Rain Forest where you’ll find a Dairy Queen located, we’re ready for a break and ice cream is the perfect cool-down treat. Oh, and good news. The Dairy Queen doesn’t have the high inflated prices you often see in zoos.

Izy, all grown up (okay, not quite) and really riding that horse this time!

What We Love Most: The Australian Adventure! Not only do you get to walk right into the Kangaroo cage, but you can enjoy black swans on the River Ride around the whole Australian Adventure.

Ways to Save on Your Visit:

  1. Parking is FREE in the zoo parking lot, so take advantage of it.
  2. Most rides are under $2 per person or you can buy a 12 ride pass for $10. It’s worth it! The only ride with height restrictions is the Sky Safari, so even the littlest family member can go.
  3. Bring a lunch. Picnic tables are located in front of the park and are shaded by trees for a nice lunch break.
  4. Visiting the zoo often? Invest in a Membership. You’ll get FREE admission for you and your family all year long for only $92, plus early admission, and more fun exclusive members-only benefits.
  5. Check out the FREE Zoo Fun page for fun FREE ideas and places to stop throughout the zoo before you visit!
  6. Through October 9, 2011, you can get a FREE child admission with purchase of an adult admission when you bring in specially marked Diet Pepsi cans!
