This is Challenge #3 sponsored by Hanes, in the 90-Day Budget Boot Camp. If you’re new, find out how you can join to kick your own budget’s butt!

Our 3rd challenge was to try generics! Head over to Mummy Deals to see her wrap-up!

As I mentioned, we all tend to have a few things we want in brand name, but some times we can save money by trying a generic version of the brand name we love.   Often it’s just a good.

This week, it was me who learned a big lesson.   As a frugal blogger and lover of anything that saves money, here’s my embarrassing admission… I’ve only been inside Aldi’s once… (lowers voice) and I was in Elementary School at the time.

Sure, I know how Aldi works.   Sure, I’ve thought about it.   And yeah, there’s one really close to my house.   But, I never go.   I’m not sure why… habit.   Fear of new things.   Or that fact that I do so well with coupons on brand names, I rarely reach for generics.

But, how did our challengers do? Read on to find out and check out their sites for full details! And don’t forget to link-up your own wrap-ups!

Kristina grew up in a brand-loyal home, but this week she saved an amazing amount of money shopping at Aldi!

Quote from 3 Under 4 –
“The nicest thing about this challenge was that by shopping at Aldi’s we were able to save about $30 AND we were even able to purchase a few “extras” such as “moo tubes” which are the off-brand of “Go-Gurts”.

Read Kristina’s favorite “save” this week and what extras she splurged on!

– – Alli ‘n Son – –

Alli is a loyal store-brand shopper already and rarely finds something that isn’t just as good as the name brand.

Quote from Alli ‘n Son –
“I’ve also been devoted to Aldi for close to a year now. It’s one of the ways that I’m able to stay at home, raising my son, rather than working just to pay the bills. Pretzels for $1.29 versus $2.00+ at a grocery store. Yes please. Turkey hot dogs for $0.89? Sign me up.

– – Better in Bulk – –

Laura already buys generics 90% of the time, so this week’s challenge wasn’t much of a challenge for her.   Plus, she had another confession to make.

Quote from Better in Bulk –
“I have another confession: I did so well planning my shopping last week that I don’t have to shop at all this week. Is that a miracle, or what?! Talk about saving money on our grocery bill!

– – The Good-Son Family Journey – –

Unfortunately, Mitzi is under the weather, but we wish her well and hope she starts feeling better very soon!

– – Rudy Family Rukus – –

For Brandie, this was the hardest challenge, since she loves brand name stuff and often, like me, gets a better deal with coupons.   In the end, she says her stubbornness helped her fail.

Quote from Rudy Family Rukus –
“You will all be pleased to know that I did still make a list and followed it based on my menu planning.  Hooray for small victories.

Find out how much Brandie saved on her shopping trip and what she must have in brand name and what she sometimes buys in generic.
