After talking about ways to maximize your earnings with your UPromise account, the questions about Meijer poured in.
Meijer?? I can see it. It’s there. It says I can use the UPromise e-coupons at Meijer! It says I can get money extra money back with my UPromise card? How? It’s there among the loyalty cards. Do they want a Meijer credit card number? Am I missing something?
Yes, you’re missing something. Let me introduce you to a little known Meijer service…
It’s not a credit card. It’s not loyalty card. It’s a community rewards card. (And it’s only available in select states, including: Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, and Michigan.)
What does that mean? You use it to support the church, school or other non-profit organization of your choice. But, you can also use it with UPromise, so you won’t need the Meijer credit card!
Here’s how…
- Head to Meijer and sign in or create an account
- Scroll down under “Get More” near the bottom and click on UPromise
- Select Apply for a Meijer 1 Card under “Get a Card”
Follow the steps to support a community non-profit organization of your choice. Pick your church or kid’s school. Don’t have either? Pick your granddaughter’s, neighbors, nephew… you get the picture. You can also e-mail the church or school and ask them to sign-up.
None of the schools my children will attend or those of friends or family were registered, nor was my church, so I’m supporting the MOPS Group that meets right down the street from my home (You’re welcome, Sarah!). You can support up to 3 organizations.
So go support a non-profit organization and get more of your money back from UPromise!
It will take a few days for the card to arrive, but the number will be on your confirmation. You will have to head to UPromise and register that number to get money back with your Meijer 1 Card with your other loyalty cards.

One thing … this says you can use this card with cash or PIN number debit card transactions. Does this mean those of us who use credit cards are out of luck?
After you asked, I went to check. I’ve been using my credit card with my Meijer 1 Card and it’s been working fine. No one has ever stopped me. However, if you search hard enough, it does say that those paying by check or other credit card are not eligible. I guess it depends on how hardcore your Meijer follows this rule. That’s unfortunate that they exclude a large group of their customers.
The card took a while to come, but I got it. It is hard to remember to use it. I always use my 1 card with my debit card, no problem.
Thanks for posting this. I didn’t even know about the Meijer 1 Card program until I read your blog post in my RSS feed. Now I have signed up and am splitting my rewards amongst 3 organizations that I am happy to support with my grocery purchases!
Oh good, Abby! I’m glad you’re getting to take advantage of the program.
