How cute is he? You’d never guess he’s been my biggest challenge. But, through it all, he keeps smiling.
Some of you have asked exactly what’s wrong with my cute little son. I’ve touched upon it, but never really told you.
He has reflux.
Once upon a time when I heard a mom say this, I’d think, “You can’t handle a little spit up?”. Oh, what I wouldn’t give for a little spit up!
It started with some grunting, which we thought was cute, but shortly after he was born he started to sound like Darth Vadar’s son. I couldn’t sleep at night, because he silently choked at random times. His throat was full of mucus. He coughed. He screamed in pain. He’d go as long as 24 hours without eating. But he was growing, so the doctors had ideas but no sure answers for me.
Finally, I went in crying, saying I just knew something wasn’t right. Hours later Daelan and I were in one of those glass rooms you seen on shows like “House” in isolation for Whooping Cough! While there, he was tested and they found he had high-grade reflux.
It’s taken a while, but we’ve also found a milk protein allergy. He’s sensitive to everything – rice cereal, certain medicines, etc… We’ve found a medicine that works for him and have him on the liquid gold Nutramigen (That does some damage to my grocery budget!!). He’s doing great most days. And now at almost 7 months it’s time to start solids.
We’ve been through so much. Ear infection after ear infection and learning that even treating him for a simple ear infection is hard, because the medicine can just make everything worse. Even the switch to the new generic version of his reflux medicine flew over like a brick and we now have to demand brand name. We’ve had to buy nebulizer to help with reflux induced breathing issues.
It’s just not “a little spit up”. In fact, he rarely spits up. It stays in his throat and tears up his esophagus.
So, solids scare me, but he’s starved. And knows. He watched the other kids in his class eat and he cries.
I picked squash. It was on his “safe list” and marked as one of the foods least likely to cause allergies. It only took two meals, before my son was coughing so bad we had to break out the nebulizer three time. He’s arching his back in pain, screaming. He’s throwing up. He’s wheezing. He’s cry is week, because he’s lost his voice. Our pediatrician has told us to wait until he gets better again, then try a new food, but my mind is telling me this has more to do with the “pre-digested” part of the formula. Just adding rice cereal to his bottle ended badly. It seems like anything that his body has to break down, ends up causing him pain.
I usually am trying to help you save money, which I love doing! But this time, I’m asking for help. I’m hoping there will be at least one voice out there who’s “been there, done that” and offer me something – guidance, peace of mind, anything. My heart is breaking, while my son is in pain. I know the symptoms of severe reflux. This is them. But could it be something more? Is there something I can do for him to help take away his pain? His symptoms? Anything?

Beth,
I wish I had a tip, advice or something to offer you. It is so heartbreaking and frustrating when your baby is sick. Have you tried seeking out a specialist or getting a second opinion? It sounds like it is more than reflux.
Hang in there momma. I hope an answer comes along.

In our area, pediatric GI doctors are hard to come by. We have talked to a few doctors and LOVE the one I’m with. He has gone above and beyond to make sure Daelan has been comfortable. Right now we’re waiting for my GI appointment to roll around. I had a 3 month wait and will finally get in on March! Hopefully, we’ll get some more answers then, but I have a friend whose daughter was this bad and at 13 years old she’s still this bad. She misses so much school and is sick all the time. They are now talking surgery for her.
Thank you, Renae
I do not any idea’s to help with reflux but I did see Nutramigen at one of our local consignment stores for 6.00/can. My niece was also on Nutramigen and I bought formula from this store for her and shipped it to Boston, MA and it was still cheaper (even paying shipping costs!) Please send me an email if you are interested in the name and number of store!
Thank you -

I have 3 year old boy/girl twins. My daughter would scream because she was hungry and then scream while she was drinking. Nutramigen (yup – I feel ya, the liquid gold!) helped her tremendously. At a year old we SLOWLY transitioned her to milk and she is much better (all better?) now. My son has some serious reflux issues. He would literally throw up everything he ate; everytime he ate. He was hungry and none too happy about it. It turned out that he has a condition called ‘hyptonia’ which is low muscle tone. I could never really understand it until it was explained to me like this “when I want to scratch my nose – I just scratch my nose because my bicep tightens and my triceps loosen…” with my son – he has to REALLY think about it, he has to learn it, it does not come naturally. It affects every system in his body – had to learn to keep his tongue in his mouth, didn’t walk until after 2 years, etc etc. But – it is considered a delay and he keeps progressing so that is encouraging.
Keep going to the Dr. Keep asking questions. Do your own research before the GI apt. so that you have all of your questions lined up.
OH, and as far as nutramigen goes – you can usually find a good source on ebay – I was buying a case a month for $150 which is 12 cans. That person is no longer selling – but just ask the different sellers if they would be willing to give you a fixed price on a monthly/bi monthly basis. You never know!

Thanks for the tip on Nutramigen. It’s ridiculous. I did find that a few states require it to be covered by insurance, but Indiana isn’t one of them yet unfortunately.
I am doing my research and hopefully our GI appointment will bring some insight. Low muscle tone was something they tested for early, because no one was looking for GERD, because he wasn’t spitting up or failing to grow. It was really just filling his esophagus and burning it, instead of coming all the way up.
My daughter had acid reflux from the time she was born until about 2 1/2 years old. She is just recently better. She never had a severe case of GERD, but was serious enough for me. Her pediatrician placed her on a prescription medicine that helped her tremendously called Axid. What prescription medicine did your son’s doctor put him on? Have they tried other med’s to see if another would work better?
I pray that you will find what works for your son. It is so hard as a mother to feel so helpless to not be able to “fix” your child’s problem and take away the pain.
We’re on Axid too. They released a generic in January and it was just enough of a change he couldn’t handle it. We went through 5 medicines and this is the only one he can handle. Just the different flavors of medicine can cause his reflux to act up badly. Peppermint, the preferred GERD medicine flavor, causes him some serious pain.
Go to your local library and request a copy of the book “The miracles of coconut oil”. It’s amazing what they say it can do. Myself and 4 others just ordered some after reading the book. My 17 yr old has reflux and doesn’t sleep well because it wakes him up several times during the night. If interested, you can email me and I will tell you where we found the lowest price online. (5 – 12 oz bottles for $23.99 & free shipping)

Thanks, I’ll have to go look into that. Being a daughter of a nurse, I tend to look past natural solutions, but I’m starting to lean that way since right now medical just isn’t doing enough. I’ve had some great recommendations from women at church on this and a few other natural remedies as well. I’ll e-mail you if I can’t find a great price or have questions!
Could it be celiac disease and not reflux.?
They don’t believe so. It runs in my family, but Daelan started this early, before he was introduced to solids. I cut it out of my breastmilk to see if that was the issue, but it didn’t change a thing. Though we made sure his first solids were gluten free.
Sorry to hear this. Our daughter, Addyson, aslo suffers from GERD and from birth (she was born 3 months early) till about 2 1/2, she had it so bad that she constantly vomited. She is gtube fed and has low tone issues as well, but we had to watch the reflux closely because she was aspirating the acid and vomit! Her lungs got even more damaged. Be sure you are getting chest x rays to look at the lungs. We, too, are in Indiana, west side of Indianapolis to be exact, and we’ve been through all the specialists at both Riley and St. Vincents. You may check with your doctor to get a script for that formula and see if your local pharmacy will order it, your insurance may cover some of it in that case! Addy’s reflux/vomiting did not stop until we added an anti-nausea medicine, typically used for chemo patients, called Ondansetron. We are also using Omeprazole (which is Prilosec, I think!). The two work well together for Addy. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions about reflux or local docs/specialists.
Ahh! That’s so sad. Daelan rarely throws up. It just fills his esophagus and fries it. We had to watch for the same reason. Daelan was choking silently in his sleep. It was so scary! We have an appointment with a highly recommended GI next month. I’ll ask about the medicine you mentioned. I wonder if it would help, even if he doesn’t actually throw up. It comes up. But not all the way.
Thank you!

My son has reflux too, it is definitely a challenge! He is almost a year and I no longer have to run into his bedroom to make sure that weird nose I heard wasn’t him choking thank goodness that has stopped! I can remember being in the hospital and I think I called a nurse in to come check on him every hour to make sure his breathing was normal! My son has a huge problem with spitting up and I have seen a huge difference in his spit up since I changed his formula for the millionth time to similac sensitive. I am not sure if the non spit up is due to him just growing out of the reflux or the formula but it might be worth a try? Nutragiem did not work for my son, nothing did. This one seems to work for whatever reason so I am sticking with it for the next month and a half till I can put him on whole milk. Have you ever tried a chiropractor? I know it may sound funny but my baby used to be in a lot of pain and I tried the chiro and he hasn’t been in pain since! My pediatrician thinks I am crazy but I swear it worked for the pain, he still spit up like crazy though. I know it is stressful and I too have gone to the pediatrician crying, pleading for some kind of answer only to be told to wait it out, he will grow out of it. Hang in there! It does get better!
I don’t at all think you are crazy for the Chiropractor. I’ve actually been thinking about it. As long as we are on Nutramigen and Axid with nothing else, he does well though. He just can’t have anything else or it gets bad.
I was right there with you. Our nurse came in a lot. He choked a lot and they had to clear out his throat a few times, because he couldn’t breath.
