Coupons 301: The Order

in Coupons & Rebates

The order in which you hand your coupons to the cashier actually makes a difference in your final OOP price. You always want to hand your items to your cashier in the following order: Loyalty Card, Purchases, $/$$ Entire Purchase Coupons, $/$$ Specific Product, and Store & Manufacturer Coupons.

Why? First, your loyalty card triggers coupons to double and sales prices, so you can make sure everything is marked correctly by handing it to the cashier before he or she rings up a single purchase. Plus, some stores, like Kroger, won’t double your coupons if you hand your loyalty card over after your coupons.

After your purchases, you immediately hand over any $/$$ coupons. You want to start with your money off your entire purchase coupons first, like $4/$20. Next hand over your money off a particular product or item, like $2 off your $7 frozen foods purchase or $3 off your $10 L’Oreal purchase. By handing over your $/$$ coupons first, you are taking the money off when your total is the highest. If you use a $4/$20 coupon, your grand total has to be $20 before coupons.

Next, you hand over your store and manufacturer coupons to cut down your OOP cost even more. If you used your $4/$20 first, now you can use your store and manufacturer coupons to cut that remaining $16 down even more. If you handed over your store and manufacturer coupons first, your after coupon total would have to be $20 after coupons to be able to use your $4/$20.

EXAMPLE

You buy the following at Meijer:

1 – Betty Crocker Warm Delight $1
2 – Totinos Pizza Rolls ($1 each) $2
1 – Cottonelle 12-Pack $4.99
1 – Frechetta Pizza $3.99
1 – Frozen Bagelfuls $1.88
1 – Tyson Whole Roaster ($0.98/lb, 8 lbs) $7.84

GRAND TOTAL: $21.70

You use the following $/$$ coupons in the following order:

$4/$20 (making your new total $17.70)
$2/$7 Frozen Product Purchase (making your new total $15.70)
$1/$7 Meat or Deli Purchase (making your new total ($14.70)

Then you use the following store and manufacturer coupons:

$0.50/1 Betty Crocker (doubles to $1)
$0.40/2 Totinos (doubles to $0.80)
$0.25/1 Cottonelle (doubles to $0.50)

$0.30/1 Bagelfuls (Meijer Mealbox coupon, does not double)
$0.50/1 Bagelfuls (doubles to $1)
