While the author of Money Saving Mom, Crystal, is on “maternity leave”, she kindly posted a guest post from me about buying in bulk! Though I know there are items that are cheaper when bought from a warehouse in bulk, for our family, I’ve found that I can find better deals at the grocery stores and it’s just not worth the membership cost. The bottom line – do the math and make sure it truly is a bargain before your buy in bulk! Sometime the smaller package is actually cheaper per unit.

I’ve had a Costco membership for about a year, but up until maybe 3 months ago I only used it to buy gas, and even sometimes found that wasn’t all that big a savings (especially when you factor in the membership fee). I started keeping track of grocery prices in my PDA, i.e. sale price + coupon at Kroger vs Costco’s normal price, keeping in mind # of servings, size/weight etc.
Some things I’ve found cheaper … Organic spring mix salad in big clamshell container $3.99, same thing at Kroger is $3.99 for a small bag. Blackberries right now are $3.99 for a 1 lb container, at Kroger they are 3.99 for a pint.
Marie Callendar frozen pot pies, 10 oz, are $2.18 at Kroger, or $1.35ea at Costco (8 ct for $10.79).
Green Giant green beans, 14.5 oz can, $1.54 at Kroger or $0.66 at Costco (12 pack $7.88).
Our Costco membership is paid for with just one 6 month supply of contact lenses for my daughter. Every other savings is just gravy. I find deals on fresh veggies, TP, allergy meds, fruit and kitty litter. Gas is always cheaper at Costco.
