Tuesday's Tip 4: Shop Solo

Unfortunately, I know this can’t happen for everyone, but for those who have the option, make grocery shopping a solo trip. Couponing and deal hunting takes concentration! I’m a stay-at-home mom with two beautiful little girls under the age of 5 and a little boy soon on the way. When I take them to the grocery store, I end up losing track of what I’m doing and spending way more than I planned to do. To avoid this, I’ve picked one night a week that I go shopping and my husband is in charge of watching the girls. How did I talk him into this? I just showed him the difference in our grocery bills with and without the kids tagging along. Even friends or family shopping with you can cause impulse buying and distractions that raise your bill!
If you can’t shop solo, then make sure you have a detailed plan, so you can get in and out without giving in to the “gimmes” and so you don’t end up rushing through the store to escape home with a whiney child.

How do you concentrate on deals while shopping to save money while in the act? Any tips for shopping with children in tow? Share!

I try asking the munchkins to help me find the item in question. You know like a scavenger hunt. It is less work for me and more fun for them, at least I think so. LOL :)

I shop alone too. I get up early on Saturday and usually get home before anyone else is even out of bed. My kids are a distraction while shopping, but my husband is even worse. I think we spend at least 2x more if he comes along.
